I am stuying the history of Loiza Aldea this year. I had the blessing to receive education on the history of Yuiza, direct from the Cacike. So I wanted to document it here so everyone can benefit from the time he took to write this history.

Our Cacike Cacibaopil writes the following...
Yuisa! or Cuisa, was a female appointed by the crown of Spain as the cacika of Jaimanio [Jaimanio was the Taino name of the original pueblo where Loiza is now located]. That India was named after 1510, after the decree of the King in granting this designation of "cacique" to any Indian who was faithful to the crown of Spain and faithful to the Holy Catholic Church. for after this date were named Other Yuisas!! Even our historians say they are reaffirmed in the theory that there was no evidence that women were Cacikas, queens, or princesses; this was an imposition of Spain on concepts of inheritence in Indian society. "Cacikas" is not a Taino word as some believe. When a Cacike died, the Spanish exalted the Taino widows (elevated their rank) as was done in Spain. There were other women named Yuisa that were appointed cacika in Jaimanio.
The real story recorded in the chronicles is that Yuisa may have been in a relationship with a mulatto named Mejias; the chronicles say she appeared talking with Canóbana and Caguas in the plantations, while the Taino Indians were enslaved, faint, dying without food!! The chronicles say that the Carib Indians killed this Yuisa next to the Mulato Mejias who was also a slave trader. The Book of Encomiendas of Indians -- [a legal system employed by the Conquistadors to regulate Native American labor, that granted a person a specified number of natives for whom they were to take "responsibility"] -- says that Francisco Cazabona replaced Yuisa when she was killed in 1513, and was succeeded by Yuisa ll.
The same happened with Anacaona; she was a Tekina, a director of areytos. She was a woman highly respected within the Taino society. A person who directed Areytos life was spared, as well as their families, when an enemy attacked the yukayekes. They took them to their villages so that there the Tekina could teach them the sacred areytos. One example was Guarionex, who was a Tekina of areytos who taught Mayobanex to do areyto of the plains.
Anacaona received the title of Queen because according to the Spanish traditions, as a sister of a king, as Bohechio, and a widow of a king, as Caonabo, well, they saw her as a Reyna cuñado [Queen by inheritance/by marriage], but this concept did not exist even in the traditional ancestral Taino thought! If a woman was Cacike she would have to inhale powders of Cojoba [hallucenogens used in Ancestral days]; if women inhaled these powders, side effects included internal bleeding and abortions, even infertility! This was a secret given to men ... not to the women; women were given 2 secrets that nothing to do with the cojoba!

As a followup, he added names of additional women who were named "Cacikas" by the Spaniards.
The Cacike writes...
"Además hay que corregir que Yuisa no fue la única mujer nombrada por los españoles en Boriken, tambien hay otras mujeres que fueron nombradas Cacicas pero, estas mujeres al igual que Yuisa, teníann bajo su cargo una cantidad de Indios para ser explotados por los Españoles y supervisados por estas cacikas. 1.Yuisa ll del Jaimanio( Loisa) 2.Cayaguana del Cayeco (Cayey) esta fue la esposa del cacike Cayey. 3. Baguanamay del Turabo( Caguas) 4.Yayo del Gurabo, (Caguas) 5.Guayeyba del Otoao ( Utuado) 6.Guayuka del Abeyno ( Salinas) 7. Gabuca del Toa( Toa Alta y Toa baja) esposa del cacike Aramaná 8.Yuisa lll del Jaimanio (Loiza)"
